Two University of Northampton employees who saved their colleague’s life after he had a heart attack at work have been given a St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes award.
At a ceremony held last night at The Lancaster in London, Fiona MacLellan and Lynne York, from the university’s library and learning services team, were given the award that celebrates ordinary people who have used first aid to save someone’s life.
The duo saved their colleague John Coles’ life after he suffered a heart attack outside of Avenue Campus. Mr Coles, a porter at the university, was driving a van when his vehicle swerved across the carriageway and collided with a tree.
After assessing the situation, Lynne and Fiona carefully removed John from the vehicle and started performing chest compressions and rescue breaths until the ambulance arrived.
Ms MacLellan said: “John received several AED shocks on the way to hospital and eventually started breathing again. The paramedic contacted the university in the days after to congratulate us on our quick and decisive actions. “
